CALIFORNIA: Cannery Row and The Monterey Bay Aquarium

The whole family was supposed to read "Cannery Row" to prepare for our trip. We were going to have  a book club. Not everyone came to class fully prepared, but those who did got to enjoy pointing out all of the Steinbeck references and nostalgic bits along the street. The fourteen sardine canneries are gone and there are no whorehouses or flophouses, but there is a shell of a former general store and the building that was Ed Ricketts' Pacific Biological Lab still stands. Oh, and the ocean. The ocean is still there.
